Learning CollaborationBrevard Community College, through its Center for Service Learning, provides student volunteers for the Zoo. This year, for the first time ever, the Community Involvement college level course was taught at Brevard Zoo. The course is designed to create an opportunity for students to arrive at a personal understanding of community services and citizenship through both practical applications and critical reflection. Each Thursday from May 17 through August 2, instructor Brenda Earhart led 17 students through two hours of classroom presentations and discussions for a total of 24 class hours. Class time was made that much more interesting by tours of Zoo exhibits expertly guided by Zoo education staff. Red Wolf Recovery Program Wins Conservation AwardRed wolves once roamed the entire southeastern United States. Because of bounty hunting and habitat loss their numbers dwindled exponentially until, only 35 years ago, a tiny population of 17 red wolves remained on the planet. Fourteen of them were to become the founders of a population recovery effort and award winning model of reintroduction programs. The current red wolf population now boasts more than 300 members, and because of their success, on September 19, 2007, the Red Wolf Recovery Program received national recognition for its contributions to conservation. ... read more. |
